A 15 Minute Mini Session and Some Great Looks!

So Ashley and the family came over for a BBQ and what better environment to try out some new indoor lighting techniques! I have been wanting to shoot indoors, so this worked out perfect. After a few practice runs with my wonderful wife, I was able to see some things I still wanted to experiment with. So I decided to post these to get the ball rolling in regards to my indoor shooting! I usually focus on environmental portraits in the wonderful areas around where we live, but this was a nice change of pace.

All shots with the D3s, Sigma 85mm 1.4 and Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 lens. I had 2 flashes triggered by PW’s in manual mode. There was a white diffuser behind Ashley lit by an SB600 and then an SB910 on a stand for main light through an umbrella. I used an aperture suitable to kill ambient light and then added the flashes to taste and feel. Playing with levels changed the background a bit so I will be playing with that as well. for now, thanks for stopping by and enjoy!

Awesome Beer + Bands + Laughs = A Perfect Day!

This past weekend I covered the Relapse Comedy Tent at SweetWater 420 Fest in Candler Park! I was also given some pretty sweet access to the pit to capture the bands performing.  Candler park is a great setting to go along with a perfect day of laughs, music and of course SweetWater Beer! There was an incredible amount of talented performers, musicians and vendors at this event. Everything was spaced out really well which made the experience perfect. It was slammed busy but well laid out to not feel crammed. The park was fully prepared to absorb and maintain the walkways and plenty of areas to relax. The folks at SweetWater really are a class act and put on one hell of a party! I urge everybody to go out to the next event they have, you won’t regret it! From a photography standpoint it was a ton of fun and lots to capture. From folks just having a good time, to the bands rocking out with lots of funk, to crazy comedy routines! Relapse is da Bomb funny!

I ran the D3s hard that day and must say, wow what a piece of equipment! It charged forward shooting great in the low light of the Relapse Comedy Tent and kept up incredibly well with the active musicians! Married to the Nikon 70-200 2.8 zoom and it was smooth as budda! Add the Sigma 85mm 1.4 and WOW. Processing the files was a bit different from other cameras, but this was expected. Every camera I have used has processed files differently. I’m still dialing it in, but very happy with the D3s! I also rode the D7000 tandem for some of the wide shots with the 17-55 2.8 zoom. It performs incredibly well for this type of photography and is a much lighter option than carrying two heavy full framed bodies.

This is a much longer post than usual with a ton of photos, however after 6 + hours I really wanted folks to feel as if they were there. Enough banter, enjoy the photos!

102 Years Young!

I had the wonderful opportunity to cover the 102nd birthday party for a friends Great Grandmother! It was a beautiful and incredibly windy day for this area. The party was early Sunday afternoon and of course cake, ice cream and lots of smiles were present as well! There were 4 families and 16 people to photograph!!

Sharing a special day like this with a great family is always memorable. Now they can have something to remember it as well. We can all relate as the person taking the photos. Why you ask? Because we are never in the photograph! Well this was great because nobody is left out!:)Here are a few of my favorites from the birthday festivities!

I present Nikon D3s…. Time to Move up to Full Frame

For the folks that have been following my blog, you have seen the progression from not knowing what the heck aperture, shutter speed, and ISO where to my current efforts. There was a day when I received my first DSLR and nothing but a black screen appeared unless I was in AUTO P Mode! I look back and am grateful for all that have helped and continue to answer my silly questions and offer comments and help me continue to grow! After many sessions and practice I decided for the type of shooting I want to continue doing, something had to change. I would review my photos to the others that inspired me, and I began noticing things. On many shoots I would have to crank up the ISO due to lower lighting in venues and then the image noise began to take over and just ruin a shot. The overall feel is much different with full frame sensors. I can only offer an anaolgy such as this to offer the difference from a high end DX “cropped sensor” to a top of the line FX “full frame” sensor.

One one side we have a Dodge Challenger, the other a high end Ferrari (Well you get the point!). Both have leather interiors, however the leather in the Italian dream machine is 100% straight off the farm leather hand sewn. They both have cool pant jobs, only the Italian has a hand sprayed and detailed finish. Both of them have power and precision, however the Ferrari is a symphony of engineering pushed to the max creating a beautiful melody when pushed to the limits. That folks is the difference between the D7000 and the D3s.

The D7000 will still be used as a second camera. Its resolution, clarity of colors, and performance are still very well suited for many types of work. However the D3s allows me to push and expand the creativeness even further. Certain limitations I had before are dismissed with the new beast. Shooting in near dark conditions and capturing the intended mood, without creating a train wreck in post to remove noise and ruin the feel of the moment, are now achievable. No It will not make me a better photographer. Crap in, well is crap out. However if you wanted to be able to go 170mph on the autobahn which would you want? Well thats easy the Challenger can’t even go 170! So here is a quick shot, with our trusty treat driven model, to show off the new tool! Thanks for stopping by, stay tuned as much shooting to happen the coming days!

2 Speedlights and the Sun = Yo Jake Lets Take Some Pictures!

Whats more fun than one speedlight and the sun? Maybe 2 speedlights and the sun?:)

After the purchase of another PW TT5 remote trigger I was able to incorporate another light on sessions when using off camera flash. I love using natural light but in some environmental portraits I have found only using reflectors could limit some of the places you want to shoot. By adding the extra speedlight I can create a “look and feel” to the photos I take. Today I asked my lovely wifey assistant and my buddy Jake to help me out. You can read all the books you want, watch all the videos till the cows come home, but the only way to get a hold of off camera lighting is to go outside and shoot. As I heard from another photographer, we ain’t curing cancer we’re taking pictures! So true but knowledge combined with practice pays off. I wanted to shoot at sunset to really get a different look to the pictures and play with a little flare from the sun on the lens and capture those beautiful colors the sun provides as it sets. Add in the fact this area is blooming and everything is going green and its awesome to be outside.

Techy side: All shot with Nikon D7000, SB910 and SB600, triggered with PW’s and using the zone controller with all flashes in manual mode. Flashes were 1/4 CTO gelled (no umbrella or softbox just bare bulb) and usually camera left for main then lower camera left on the SB600 for punch and fill. The sun provided the rim light and shadows. What did I notice with 2 flashes instead of one? Well one would have been fine, but with 2 I can shoot in some additional areas and create a certain look and feel to the photos. I love one light and some sessions will call for that, however I was after a look and 2 in combination with the sun definitely delivered! This was my first time using 2 flashes at the same time balancing with the sun. I stayed at max sync speed 1/250 and used my aperture and iso to achieve the ambient and manual flash to create the effect I was looking for. I have been trying some new processing techniques on the finished photos as well. Lots of fun and can’t wait until the next shoot! Thanks for stopping by!
